Shiko Munakata
Shiko Munakata (1903-1975) was an internationally acclaimed printmaker known as "the world’s Munakata." Munakata's single-minded devotion to his woodblocks is etched in the memories of many people. Each of the three regions where Munakata lived or based his creative activities- Aomori, Tokyo, and Toyama- had a major influence on his development as an artist.

In commemoration of the 120th anniversary of Munakata's birth, museums in each region (Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art, Aomori Museum of Art, and The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) will collaborate to present this exhibition, which will focus on the relationship between Munakata and each region, crossing various fields such as board painting, Japanese-style painting, and oil painting, as well as bookbinding, illustrations, wrapping paper design, film, television, radio, and other media.

The exhibition introduces Munakata's wide-ranging activities, including bookbinding, illustrations, wrapping paper design, film, television, and radio appearances, and reconsiders what kind of artist Munakata was. From palm-sized postcards to large murals in public architectural spaces, this is a major retrospective exhibition that traces the "making of Munakata" - the process of expanding the possibilities of "board painting" and making "the world's Munakata" a social phenomenon through various media.
