The Beauty of Ainu Handiwork

Toyota City Folk Crafts Museum
Finished
Soetsu Yanagi (1889-1961), founder of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, recognized the significance of Ainu craftsmanship early on. In 1941, he organized the museum’s first Ainu Craft Exhibition at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. At that time, textile artist Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984) was entrusted with selecting and displaying the works for the exhibition. Serizawa himself highly valued and collected Ainu craftsmanship. This exhibition showcases the Ainu craft collections as seen through the eyes of Yanagi and Serizawa, with pieces from the Japan Folk Crafts Museum and the Shizuoka City Serizawa Keisuke Art Museum. Additionally, Ainu crafts from the recently donated Takamatsu Collection will also be on display.
