Mingei - The Beauty of Everyday Things

Nagoya City Art Museum
Finished
Mingei, or folk crafts, was first proposed by the philosopher Yanagi Muneyoshi about 100 years ago. The concept of Mingei, which involves appreciating the beauty in everyday life and caring for the materials and makers, is now once again needed and is becoming more familiar in our lives. This exhibition will unravel the mysteries of Mingei through the themes of "food, clothing, and shelter," and display approximately 150 beautiful Mingei items that have been used in daily life. In addition, we will visit the areas where Mingei is still produced today, and introduce the makers who work there and the handicrafts that have been handed down through the generations.

Another highlight will be an installation that combines modern lifestyles with folk art by Terry Ellis and Keiko Kitamura (MOGI Folk Art Director), who served as director of the select shop BEAMS until the summer of 2022 and has played a major role in the current folk art boom.

This exhibition explores the beauty in everyday life that Yanagi preached, and what folk art is - its expansion, present, and future.
