The Art of Light - Observing and Witnessing

Ansel Adams, Caj Bremer, Christopher Burkett, Ernst Haas, Taishi Hirokawa, Kenro Izu, Michael Kenna, Paul Strand et al.
Christopher Burkett (born 1950, Canada) uses a large 8×10 inch camera to capture motifs of the American wilderness. In "Fremont Cottonwood and Light, Utah," a majestic tree is depicted. The rock surface spreading in the background is covered in shadow, indicating that the photo was taken backlit. When shooting backlit, the front of the subject is often in shadow, but light surrounds the tree and the ground, revealing beautiful colors. While speculative, it seems that a rock surface similar to the background might have stood in front of the tree. The light reflecting off that rock surface and the ground seems to brightly illuminate the tree.

Michael Kenna (born 1953, UK) is known for creating monochromatic, fantastical landscapes. "Sakura and Full Moon, Urakawa, Hokkaido" was taken on a full moon night, as the title suggests. The moon appears as a line, indicating that the shutter was open for several hours. Despite the long exposure, the cherry blossom tree in the foreground shows almost no blur. This indicates that Kenna chose a windless night when the full moon would pass behind the cherry blossoms.

Such days, times, and perfect conditions, like in these two works, are rare. Photographers challenge the weather and nature, which are beyond human control, continuously observing the scenes before them. When they encounter a miraculous, once-in-a-lifetime moment, they capture it with their honed skills in a single photograph. The photos born from such efforts stand apart from those easily taken by pressing the shutter.

This exhibition features masterpieces of landscape photography created by renowned photographers from Japan and abroad, using their unique perspectives and techniques, from the Shadai Gallery Collection.
