Taishi Hirokawa "Sonomama Sonomama"

JCII Photo Salon

Artists

Taishi Hirokawa
This exhibition will feature 44 vintage prints, all in black and white, from Hirokawa's first photo book, "Sonomama Sonomama" (1987), which received high acclaim both domestically and internationally. The series was photographed over five years. With high-brand fashion items from Comme des Garçons, Issey Miyake, and Yohji Yamamoto loaded in a wagon, the journey's destinations were decided on a whim. Hirokawa photographed portraits of people met along the way, such as farmers plowing fields, fishers, ship dismantlers, village clockmakers, ice cream vendors, and temple priests, dressed in designer fashion. These portraits capture the fusion of people rooted in their communities, their clothing, and the landscape. It showcases the chemical reaction between pure, nature-bound humans and designer fashion.
