This fall, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki's birth, the Sagawa Art Museum will hold "Shigeru Mizuki's Specters”.

Shigeru Mizuki (1922-2015) is a representative figure in the Japanese manga world. In addition to his manga serialization, Mizuki continued to draw numerous yokai pictures throughout his life, drawing from a variety of literature on yokai research. This exhibition will display more than 100 of Mizuki's yokai paintings, including "Gazu Hyakki Yagyo" by the Edo period painter Sekien Toriyama (1712-1788), "Yokai Dangi" by the early Showa period folklorist Kunio Yanagida (1875-1962), and others, as well as a collection of yokai from Mizuki's own collection.

Mizuki, the creator of many yokai works including his masterpiece "Gegege no Kitaro," not only helped popularize the term "yokai," but also continued to be a driving force behind the yokai boom for many years to come.

This exhibition will showcase how Mizuki, who has rooted the culture of "yokai" in modern Japanese society, has faced and depicted yokai, bringing yokai closer to the Japanese people and allowing them to experience the world of Mizuki, who continues to fascinate many people today.

*This exhibition requires advance reservations. Please check the official website for details.
