Artists

Shigeru Mizuki
Shigeru Mizuki (1922-2015) is one of Japan's leading manga artists. He published many works based on yokai (monsters/ghosts) and established the culture of enjoying yokai in modern Japan.

This exhibition, planned on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Mizuki's birth in 2022, will focus on the behind-the-scenes creation of his yokai paintings for the first time among the many exhibitions of his work that have been held to date. Through the display of rare yokai-related materials from the artist's own collection and manuscripts of his manga works, the exhibition will explore how Shigeru Mizuki both respected and further enriched the yokai worlds created by his predecessors.

The exhibition also features a large collection of original drawings of yokai painted by Shigeru Mizuki. Visitors will be able to fully appreciate his detailed and comical brushwork and unique worldview.
