Saga Arashiyama Bird and Flower Garden

Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts and Culture
Finished
In the summer of 2025, the Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts & Culture will be transformed into a kachoen. Kachoen, or bird and flower garden, is known as a place where visitors can freely interact with released birds indoors as if they were in nature. Kachoen is popular with people of all ages and was created with traditional Japanese values in mind, such as kacho fugetsu (flower, bird, wind, and moon).

“Kacho Fugetsu" is a word to admire the natural beauty throughout the seasons. Based on this desire for beauty, kachoen was opened in various locations in Japan. Meanwhile, painters have also been trying to express beautiful things as paintings since ancient times, and have painted kacho-ga, which mainly features flowers and birds as its subject matter.

This exhibition aims to bring together the museum and kachoen, both of which value the Japanese sense of beauty. It introduces many birds painted by artists active from the 18th to 20th centuries, including birds living by the water, small and lovely birds, and cool birds of prey, together with beautiful flowers.
