Regard: Yamasaki Toshio and Images of the Inner World

Art Space Co-jin
Finished
The exhibition introduces artworks created by Toshio Yamasaki, who conducted painting classes at Kyoto Prefectural Rakunan Hospital. Painting classes at the hospital began in May 1971 for individuals undergoing treatment for mental illnesses. The classes resulted in numerous artworks, regularly exhibited from 1981, and compiled in a 1996 collection. The title "Regard" reflects Yamasaki's small publishing company, emphasizing the importance of the gaze towards individuals as it means "gaze" in French. Yamasaki, who passed away in 2021, aimed to cherish each person's gaze. The exhibition aims to revive stored artworks, allowing visitors to sense Yamasaki's attentive approach to each individual.
