Artists

Ryoji Arai
Ryoji Arai (1956-) is an internationally acclaimed artist who in 2005 became the first Japanese to receive the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Prize for Literature. His wide-ranging activities include not only picture books, but also painting, music, and stage design.

For Arai, who describes himself as a "picture book creator as well," the method of using pictures and words to tell a story is always the starting point for his creative work. In recent years, however, Arai's creative activities have transcended genres and locations, including the publication of his first book “Meta Meta" in 2010, "Ryoji Arai's Yamagata nani" in his hometown of Yamagata, and the artistic direction of the "Michino Okuno Art Festival Yamagata Biennale".

In this exhibition, Arai reconstructs and introduces works that speak of his "past" and "future. In addition, Arai will present a new three-dimensional installation, “New Born.”

Ryoji Arai broadens the scope of his activities with a feeling as if he were traveling, transforming his anxiety and fear of not being able to see what lies ahead into enjoyment. Where has he traveled so far, and where will he go next? Please come and experience the exhibition where a new Ryoji Arai will be born.
