Nanae Mitobe
“Dansaekhwa” is a painting style practiced by Korean artists in the 1970s, referring to monochrome painting. However, it is not only a visual expression, but also features a variety of forms and materials, such as spirit and performance.

Mitobe learned of Dansaekhwa during the residency program at the Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art in Gwangju, Gyunggi-do, South Korea, from late 2024 to 2025. She has exhibited many impressive paintings with a wide range of colors and heavily textured paints, but now that she has gained a deeper appreciation of Dansaekhwa, she is enthusiastic about the new challenge, saying, “I think I can express what I want to convey more strongly by narrowing down the numbers of colors.

In this exhibition, in addition to the new attempt to narrow down the colors, she will create more intense works that speak to the viewer both materially and physically. During this residency, she has been working on about 50 abstracted figurative paintings, gradually and steadily reducing the colors to aim for her own interpretation of Dansaekhwa.
