Nan Wei
Nan Wei, born in 1994 in Beijing, China, and currently residing in Kyoto, Japan, specializes in lacquer art using leather as a material. In 2015, during her study abroad at Saga University, she encountered lacquer sculpture works known as "lacquer objets" and was deeply drawn to them. This sparked her interest in incorporating the sculptural sense and finishing techniques involving lacquer into her creations.

Wei's works are characterized by capturing the accidental and beautiful curved surfaces encountered during the process of pulling and wrinkling leather, using lacquer to preserve and enhance their rich forms. The colors of her works predominantly feature the glossy and profound black and powerful red, representative of lacquer. By integrating the textures of lively animal leather materials into her works, she brings out the uniqueness of her sculptures and explores new possibilities in lacquer art.
