Mingei Exhibition

Iwaki City Art Museum
Finished
About 100 years ago, the thinker Muneyoshi Yanagi discovered beauty in handcrafted items used in daily life and advocated the concept of folk art. The concept of "mingei," or appreciating the beauty found in daily life and caring about the materials and makers, is needed once again and is becoming a familiar part of daily life.

This exhibition explores the theme of mingei in terms of "clothing, food, and shelter," and displays approximately 150 beautiful mingei items that have been used in daily life. It also visits the places where folk crafts are still produced and introduce the makers who work there and the handicrafts that have been handed down from generation to generation.

Another highlight of the exhibition is an installation by Terry Ellis and Keiko Kitamura (director of Mogi Folk Art), who were the directors of the select store Beams until last summer and have greatly influenced the current folk art boom, that fuses contemporary lifestyle and folk art.
