Fushimi-dono Goatsurae: Kosode Kire and Restored Kosode - Understanding Kosode Production in the Momoyama Period through Ink Inscriptions and Cloth Restoration

Marubeni Gallery
Finished
This exhibition will showcase rare Kosode Kire (fragments of a kimono) from the Momoyama period held in the Marubeni Collection, as well as the restored Kosode based on them. Over more than three years, from July 1996 to December 1999, the Marubeni Corporation undertook the restoration as part of its 50th-anniversary commemorative project. The entire process, from sericulture to thread production, hand weaving, boiling, sketching, threading, tie-dyeing, dyeing, to tailoring, was reconstructed as closely as possible using Momoyama-period techniques.

Moreover, the Kosode Saki bears the ink inscription "Fushimi-dono Goatsurae," and it has been believed to be a part of the Kosode worn by Yodo, a concubine of Hideyoshi. This exhibition aims to elucidate the purpose and reason for the ink inscription from the perspective of the textile production of that time. Also demonstrated is that the commissioner of the Kosode is not necessarily Yodo, and the exhibition will introduce the valuable Momoyama-period textile, the Tsujiga Hana Kire.

Similar to the exhibition "The Tale of Genji - The Beauty of a Court Lady's Attire, Reborn" held from December 1 to 28, 2023, this project is a collaboration between top-notch experts and artisans. It aims to share new academic discoveries and validate techniques openly, to pass down this knowledge to future generations.
