Empty Inside

Eitoeiko
Until Nov 16

Artists

Hitomi Ikeda, Aoi Tashiro, Yoko Nakamura
eitoeiko is pleased to present “Empty Inside,” an exhibition by three artists from October 19 to November 16. This is an exhibition consisting only of surfaces made of thread, paper, and wire mesh, which are empty inside.
In the presence of these artworks, we will examine what the contents of the works are. The three artists Hitomi Ikeda, Aoi Tashiro, and Yoko Nakamura use different materials for their artwork in terms of their strength, characteristics, and origins, but the themes and properties of the materials they use may provide us with hints for living in our society.
Hitomi Ikeda creates artworks using crochet lace (lace knitting) fixed with resin. The artwork, which seems to bring only the superficial layers of things to the surface in space, may be a form of something invisible to the eye, but which remains in our minds, like a memory. The lightness of the weight is also an element that evokes the gap between imagination and reality.
Aoi Tashiro presents three-dimensional artwork made of textiles woven from the paper receipts she accumulated each time she purchased a product. If we compare the acts related to all aspects of life, including food, clothing, housing, learning, and entertainment, to the “front side” of society, this artwork shows the record of consumption or the price paid for it, and in a sense, creates another aspect using receipts issued on the “back” side of society.
Yoko Nakamura creates artwork by softly bending a sturdy and heavy metal mesh, which is a materials used in architecture, to draw a light curved surface like a fabric. Her artworks dislocate the elements of gravity, solidity, and strength to create the illusion of reality. Her artwork, which is fired with ceramic clay adhered to it, is surrealistic in its assumption of age and technique.
What do you see in the empty inside? We hope you will enjoy the exhibition by trying to imagine what is contained in them. We look forward to seeing you at the gallery.
