"Director! What Should We Do With This?"

Accessory Museum
Finished
The Accessory Museum is a private art museum established based on the collection of Yoshiharu and Motoko Tanaka, a couple who were costume jewelry manufacturers and vendors. Most of the collection is related to fashion and was gathered for procurement and research shortly after the lifting of the overseas travel ban in the late 1960s. These items were used as research materials and samples during meetings with Japanese craftsmen and designers at the time. Today, they are displayed in the museum to nurture the next generation.

Additionally, the renovated building, which used to be their residence, contains many personal collections of the couple. These include memories from their travels to 56 countries, ranging from a cannon the size of a medium-sized dog to paintings and busts they each call their lovers, beautiful old books with illustrations from esoteric Buddhist implements to illustrations. Occasionally, these items resurface, eliciting laughter from the curators. The couple continues to focus on collecting to enrich the exhibition content, contributing to the continuous growth of the museum both in terms of its collection and as an art institution.

This special exhibition, as the museum approaches its 15th anniversary in 2025, reconsiders the charm of the "collections" of a private art museum. Explore the couple's collection, unveiled for the first time, and items that occasionally make curators ponder "Director! What Should We Do With This?"
