Crafting the Kanna-Dai: The Formation and Evolution of Plane Body Artisans in Tokyo

Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum
Finished
The "dai-uchi" process, which is said to have a greater impact on the performance of a plane than sharpening the blade, refers to the process of making the plane block to adjusting the "suge" (blade bedding). This exhibition introduces the technique of "dai-uchi," focusing on the work of Soichiro Ito (1922-2017), the master plane maker known for crafting planes that are "firm" and "stable."
