Bernard Buffet
Bernard Buffet attracted attention as a painter at the young age of 20 in 1948. It was a time in France after World War II when people were liberated from the oppression of Nazi occupation and began to enjoy various cultures they had long yearned for. Cultural figures from various fields gathered in cafes to exchange ideas, while young people enthusiastically embraced the philosophies of Camus and Sartre while creating new fashions. Juliette Gréco sang Miles Davis played cool jazz, and Brigitte Bardot enlivened the screen... Buffet was truly a painter who lived in such a period.

In this exhibition, portraits of cultural figures representing the era, who created a new culture in the Parisian neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where Buffet painted many Parisian landscapes throughout his painter's life, as well as Parisian scenes painted by painters before Buffet, will be displayed. Additionally, movie posters and materials from that time will also be exhibited. Buffet's beloved wife, Annabel, was also one of the muses who made Saint-Germain-des-Prés a special place, as she had been active as a model and singer even before meeting Buffet.

In his late teens, Buffet, who was diligently creating artworks to debut as a painter, enjoyed movies with his brother and sister-in-law at the "Ciné-Club," which was popular in Paris at that time. Buffet made his debut as a painter at a time when the "Nouvelle Vague" (New Wave), which did not adhere to previous production methods, emerged, and the French film industry began producing ambitious masterpieces one after another, precisely during that era. Buffet was even invited as a jury member to the 11th Cannes Film Festival in 1958, at the height of his popularity. Please enjoy the atmosphere of that time through the movie posters of the late 1950s and subsequent French films.
