Nerima Art Museum has been collecting art since its opening in 1985. It currently has a collection of about 5,500 works, or around 7,500 including works on loan. Paintings are an important part of this collection, as many are essential to the story of postwar art in Japan.

This exhibition looking back on postwar expression will display around 70 works by about 35 artists. With a focus on oil paintings, the works range from those painted shortly after World War II to those produced in recent years.

This collection reflects the world and ideas of each era in various ways. It also reveals the history of the museum itself. The works that have been acquired (purchased, donated, or loaned) take on new expressions when they are moved from storage to the exhibition space.
