Saul Leiter
Saul Leiter (1923-2013) was a leading fashion photographer in New York from the 1950s up until the 1980s, when he was forced to retire from commercial photography and disappeared from this world to pursue private projects. In 2006, a collection of his photographs published with Steidl Verlag in Germany brought him back into the limelight. By then he was 83 years old. The re-discovery of Saul Leiter led to the creation of numerous exhibitions and publications. In 2012 a documentary film titled “In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter” was released, though it did not appear in Japan until 2015, making his name and works known to an even bigger international audience.
This exhibition, organized in full cooperation with the Saul Leiter Foundation, presents photographic works, both monochrome and color, as well as paintings and other invaluable materials from their collection. It is the first retrospective to be held in Japan that addresses the secrets behind the practice of this “pioneer of color photography.”
