HECTARE is pleased to present “Cross-medium,” a two-person exhibition by artists Thomas Gillant and Yuma Yoshimura. This exhibition explores the boundary between the visual and the tactile, focusing on the traces left in material and space through physical acts such as drawing and carving.

Thomas Gillant examines the relationship between sight and matter through oil painting techniques, employing spray guns, brushes, and rollers to explore the dynamics of visual perception. His strokes, created through the intersection of manual and mechanical processes, generate a sense of depth and motion, prompting viewers to reconsider the interplay between vision and materiality. Through the accumulation of gestural traces, his paintings embody a layered temporality, expanding the notion of a painting as a physical object.

Yuma Yoshimura, on the other hand, constructs a visual language that bridges the internal and external, working with materials and themes characterized by dualities—light and shadow, infinity and finitude. By cutting and carving surfaces of materials such as aluminum and charcoal, he creates forms as traces. His process, which oscillates between sculptural and painterly approaches, allows light and shadow to interact dynamically, producing a shimmering effect within the space. Yoshimura’s works, with their intuitive forms reminiscent of primitive art, emphasize a deep engagement with the physicality of materials.

In this exhibition, the traces formed through different techniques resonate with one another, dissolving the boundary between the visual and the tactile. By perceiving movement and transformation within seemingly static works, the viewer is invited into a new perceptual experience.
