Takashi Kawashima
Takashi Kawashima was born in Miyagi prefecture in 1985. After graduating with an MA from Tokyo Polytechnic University, he was selected for the a.a.t.m (Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi), and he received the 2012 grand prize at the Tokyo Frontline Photo Award. In 2015, he published ‘New Coast, and a Fragment Over a Woman,’ a photo book that was selected for the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival and won the Jury Prize in the Art Division. He has participated in numerous art fairs, such as the unseen photo fair in the Netherlands, Photo London, and the 2015 Jimei X Arles: Encounters Between East West – International Photo Festival in Xiamen, China, where Kawashima received positive reviews.
People who live in Japan frequently experience catastrophic events caused by natural disasters – from the many active volcanoes to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake that devastated Kawashima’s hometown – and these heavily influence the motifs that Kawashima selects in his work.
This body of work makes references to the distinctive writings of authors he chooses, such as W.G. Sebald, Antonio Tabucchi, Susan Sontag, Michel Houellebecq and Kobo Abe, which he then weaves together with other quoted texts from literature, photography, digital programming, 3DCD, films, and sculptures. His approach is not to ‘take’ post-hoc but to ‘make’ it beforehand. Kawashima’s creative process is not like a documentary; rather than portray events sequentially, he utilizes fragments and threads in a poetic approach telling multiple stories that audiences find evocative. Showing at G/P gallery Shinonome is the restructured large-scale installation work that is based on his 2015 photo book ‘Unfinished Topography/Collection.’
