The video art movement, started 51 years ago by Nam June Paik, included steady contributions by Andy Warhol, and today encompasses artists working in diverse genres. The five video artists of this exhibition do not simply use their equipment to produce recorded images, but utilize the unique properties of video as video to take unflinching looks at what can be seen through this electronic format. They each continue in various veins of avant grade art history, revealing once again forms that invariably emerge in the contemporary medium of video. Kentaro Taki uses cubist movements to deconstruct images. Shuhei Nishiyama cooly applies a Doesburgian style of structural analysis to video. Ryota Hamasaki spins nouveau roman-like tales of the desolate relationships of men and women. Finally, Sung Nam Han warps the conventions of drama is a way reminiscent of the French author Guillaume Apollinaire. Video art’s forefather Nam June Paik once remarked, “Braun tubes are a new form of canvas in the way that collage is a new kind of paint.” The works of these up-and-coming video artists offer a look at video as one realization of this art form.
