Osamu Kikuchi “Towards the Completion of Ikkigaki”

Osamu Kikuchi
“Ikkigaki” means to draw with heat, a rapid process of painting filled with all of one’s energy. Kikuchi uses such a technique in his depiction of landscapes of the South of France, where he has been touched by people’s warmth and kindness and has come to develop his approach into a way of life. Upon returning to Japan Kikuchi has continued this technique to paint images of Japanese landscapes and female nudes, and now he talks of having entered a period in which he must finally pull the concept of ikkigaki together and, while perhaps it is the influence of the human warmth encountered in France, as of late within his ikkigaki paintings there may be seen a certain softness which may make us sense a certain presence of love.
