Hiroshi Senju "Recent Works, featuring Fusuma Murals from Philadelphia's Shofuso"

Yamatane Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hiroshi Senju
Built in the garden of Museum of Modern Art in 1954 and moved to Fairmount Park, Philadelphia in 1958, the “Shofuso” was a gift from Japanese citizens to American citizens in 1954 as a symbol of friendship. This historical work of architecture was designed by the late Junzo Yoshimura, a globally known Japanese architect.

The Fusuma Murals were painted by the late Higashiyama Kaii, who was also one of the most renowned Japanese artists. Unfortunately, all of the paintings were damaged from poor maintenance. Recently Hiroshi Senju, a well-known artist who lives in New York City was asked to repaint the Fusuma. The opening ceremony for the new Fusuma Murals will be in April 2007.

The Yamatane Museum of Art will be exhibiting these murals for the first time in Japan, with the aim of developing US-Japan cultural exchange.

In this exhibition the museum is also displaying Senju’s earlier works from the Yamatane collection and his latest paintings titled “Falling Colors”.
