Kuwana City Museum

In February 1971, using the building of former branch office of Hyakugo Bank, “Kuwana City Museum of Culture and Art” opened as the first municipal art museum in the Mie prefecture, based on the citizens’ donations. Thereafter, due to the increase in collection and the deterioration of the building, the expansion/renovation work was carried out from December 1983 to October of next year. After a year of drying period, we restart as the first municipal museum in the prefecture.
We have an exhibition room for special exhibitions on the first floor and another one equipped Japan’s first wall-mounted air-tight cases and a literature room on the second floor. We have two storage rooms, one mainly contains traditional crafts, the another contains screens, hanging scrolls and other works.
Most of our collections are donated by benefactors. We have various works such as historical materials about Matsudaira Sadanobu and Kuwana Han (the domain of Kuwana in the Edo period), traditional pottery of Kuwana called “Banko Yaki” or “Kobanko,” japanese tea things and oil paintings by local painters.
