Sadanobu Matsudaira and the Tale of Genji

Kuwana City Museum
Finished
"The Tale of Genji" is a long narrative written by Shikibu Murasaki during the mid-Heian period and is known as a representative classic in Japanese literature. This work has been recognized not only as a literary piece but has also expanded into the realm of art, particularly in the form of paintings depicting scenes from the narrative, known as "Genji-e," contributing to its status as a cherished symbol of an elegant world.

This exhibition will introduce pieces from the collection, such as Sadanobu Matsudaira's transcription of "Detailed Copy of The Tale of Genji" and Hanayamakanono's screen painting illustrating scenes from "The Tale of Genji." These artworks offer a glimpse into the refined world symbolized by "The Tale of Genji" that has been passed down through the ages.

On the second-floor exhibition room, "Mountains and the Moon in Japanese Paintings" and "Sword Selection III - Kuwahaku Dragons" will be concurrently displayed.
