Animals have various connections with humans in their lives, and they also serve as numerous subjects in the field of art, with a wide range of expressions being developed.

The painter Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934) from the Taisho era, kept small animals as pets and visited zoos, showing a keen interest in animals. In his paintings of women and children, animals such as dogs and cats are depicted accompanying people. Furthermore, in book covers and board games, he playfully stylized animal figures.

In this exhibition, the focus is on creatures depicted by Takehisa, including birds, insects, and fish, introducing unique and distinctive animal expressions.
