Nakaji Yasui
Nakaji Yasui (1903-1942) was a photographer who, in the turbulent times from the Taisho period to the outbreak of the Pacific War, pursued every technique and possibility of photography, imprinting unforgettable images that moved the heart onto photographic paper. This exhibition is being held In commemoration of the 120th anniversary of his birth.

Yasui was born in 1903 in what is now Chuo Ward, Osaka. Enchanted by a camera given to him by his parents, he became a member of the prestigious Naniwa Shashin Kurabu, a club for like-minded individuals, in his teens. In no time, he became a well-known photographer throughout Japan. His work was characterized by the use of pigment printing techniques and an approach to photography that was different from the pictorialist movement that was popular in Japan around 1930. While Yasui's work was sensitive to the trends of the time, it consistently captured the trembling of the heart that occurs when one confronts the world through a camera lens, doing so delicately and sometimes intensely. In addition to his outstanding work, Yasui was beloved by people for his warm and sincere personality. However, he passed away in 1942 due to illness at the young age of 38.

In this exhibition, approximately 140 vintage prints were created by the artist himself, and around 60 modern prints, including 20 newly produced prints for this exhibition, are showcased. The works are organized into five chapters that follow a chronological sequence, allowing visitors to explore the full scope of his achievements. The distinctive quality of Yasui's keen eye, which delved into every subject, becomes even more evident, and his works take on greater symbolism, shedding light on the era in which Yasui lived and the modern age.
