Yasuji Inoue
This special exhibition will explore the landscapes of Tokyo from around the Meiji era, when it was transforming into a modern city, through the eyes of the renowned artist Inoue Anji, who captivated audiences with his beautifully realistic depictions. Anji Inoue, who celebrated his 160th birthday this year, is known for his numerous works depicting Tokyo landscapes, created with his sensibilities. His masterpiece, "Tokyo Shinga Meisho Zukai," consists of 134 works portraying the evolving landscapes of Tokyo during a brief period from 1881 to 1889, when he passed away at a young age.

This exhibition will showcase selected works by Inoue Anji featuring gas lamps, which were symbolic of modern urban Tokyo. These artworks, depicting gas lamps, buildings, bridges, and horse-drawn railway carriages, among other elements, portray the spirit of modernity as captured by Inoue Anji's gaze.

One such artwork depicts the evening scene along Ginza Street, which became the new face of Tokyo illuminated by gas lamps. Another portrays the night scene near Suruga-cho in Nihonbashi (present-day Nihonbashi Muromachi), where gas lamps and moonlight illuminate the bustling streets with carriages and people. Additionally, pieces depict the lively atmosphere in front of the long-established kimono shop Daimaru-ya during the Edo period, with horse-drawn railways and rickshaws bustling about, showcasing the vibrancy of the modern city. Asakusa's Azumabashi, a renowned landmark in many ukiyo-e prints of the time, is also depicted in numerous works by Inoue Anji. Scenes such as the night view of Azumabashi with gas lamps or the lively atmosphere near the bridge with people dressed in colorful Western attire under cherry blossoms offer glimpses into the city's ambiance during the Meiji period, inviting visitors to feel the spirit of modernization and cultural enlightenment.
