The Tale of Genji: Another Story - Fake Murasaki and the Country Genji

Nakagawa-machi Bato Hiroshige Museum of Art
Finished
The epic novel "The Tale of Genji," by Shikibu Murasaki in the Heian period, remains an immortal masterpiece passed down through the ages for over a thousand years. During the Edo period, Ryutei Tanehiko adapted "The Tale of Genji" into a series of volumes called "Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji," which became a bestseller. The illustrations for "Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji" were created by the third-generation artist Utagawa Toyokuni (Kunisada). This exhibition introduces ukiyo-e prints based on "Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji" and its sequels, along with Toyokuni's "Ima Genji Nishiki-e Awase," portraying "The Tale of Genji" from the Edo period's perspective.
