Among the woodblock prints of the Edo period, those created by special order and not for general sale are known as "surimono." Surimono were mainly drawn by ukiyo-e artists and produced in limited quantities of a few dozen or a few hundred, making surviving examples rare and infrequently displayed. However, as bespoke items, they possess unique charms not found in commercial prints, such as luxurious use of gold and silver or mica, intricate carving and printing, unusual themes, and insights into the private circumstances or tastes of the commissioners.

This special exhibition features 269 selected pieces from the extensive surimono collection of Georges Leskowicz, who resides in Paris. The exhibit is divided into two periods and showcases rare pieces from the heyday of Edo surimono in the first half of the 19th century, including works by Hokusai and his disciples Hokkei and Gakutei, as well as Shunman, Hiroshige, Eisen, and Kunisada. The exhibition presents the essence of surimono culture.

This exhibition is a collaborative event with "Abeno Harukas Art Museum 10th Anniversary - Hiroshige," held in Osaka at the Abeno Harukas Art Museum from July 6 to September 1.
