A hundred years ago, during the Taisho era in Japan, a flourishing popular culture gave rise to new values distinct from those of the past. In the world of Japanese painting, significant developments such as the revival of the Japan Art Institute, the formation of the National Creative Painting Association, and reforms in official exhibitions allowed artists to create freely and diversely, reflecting the spirit of the times.

Artists such as Taikan Yokoyama, who studied the opulent expressions of the Rinpa school, Seiho Takeuchi, who pursued innovative compositions based on sketching, and Shiho Sakakibara and Kagaku Murakami, who drew on Western painting techniques to create weighty Japanese paintings, each sought their unique modes of expression. These works remain fascinating even to contemporary viewers a century later.

This exhibition showcases Nihonga created from the mid-Taisho period to the early Showa period, roughly 100 years ago.
