Shuji Terayama
Shuji Terayama, who lived far away from his mother during his junior high and high school years, connected to his mother through letters. He wrote an enormous number of letters, including correspondence with his former teacher that continued from his mid-teens through adolescence, exchanges with high school haiku poets from all over Japan, love letters to Eiko Kujo, a successful actress, and a "newsletter" that he published in his later years.

An extreme example is a postcard he sent to himself from abroad. Terayama was a hardcore letter writer.
He often created other works on the theme of letters, including a play titled "Letters to a Blind Man," a performance called "Letter Theatre" using postal mail, and a group of photographic works mimicking postcards. There is also a work from his final years, "Video Letter," a video letter exchanged with Shuntaro Tanikawa.

In recent years, the majority of the donated materials received by the museum are letters sent by Terayama. The letters that Terayama wrote and sent while he was alive and that are scattered here and there are now being "delivered" 40 years after his death. Terayama wrote letters from abroad to himself in Tokyo to create an alibi. It is as if he is still somewhere in the world, sending letters on a whim.

"When everyone else has gone, I will write letters on my own.” This is the essence of Terayama's creative work, which places great importance on catching words and dialogue.
