Seibo Kitamura
The Sculpture Garden of the Inokashira Park Zoo will hold a special exhibition featuring framed calligraphy, inked colored paper, and calligraphy on half-sheets by Seibo Kitamura, which have been kept in private collections until now.

Modern sculptor Seibo Kitamura began to enjoy calligraphy after moving his studio to Inokashira. Unlike sculpture, which requires meticulous calculation of every detail, calligraphy was a means for Kitamura to express his feelings of the moment through the prospect of impromptu ink smudges and blurs. The characteristics of Kitamura's calligraphy were influenced by avant-garde calligraphy, and some of his works combine pictures and characters like ideographs, while others combine haiku poems he created himself with ink and wash paintings.

For Kitamura, who had been engaged in the spread of Western plastic arts and plastic arts education since the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912), the expression of letters is thought to have been one way of rethinking the uniqueness of Japanese art. Unlike public sculptures, many of Kitamura's calligraphic works have been handed down to private collectors and are in private collections, or his calligraphy is displayed at the gates of temples and shrines, where it can be seen by many people without the author's name being known.

This exhibition presents a complete picture of the calligraphy of Seibo Kitamura, including the meanings of the words and phrases.
