Scary Ghosts Ukiyo-e

Mizuno Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika, Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka et al.
Toward the end of the Edo period, there was a boom in ghost stories. Ghostly figures became a popular subject in ukiyo-e, the entertainment of that era, depicted with a terrifying and somewhat charming touch that continues to delight us today.

This exhibition showcases around 100 pieces, including ghost and yokai ukiyo-e prints by popular artists of the time such as Hokusai Katsushika, Kuniyoshi Utagawa, and Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, as well as rare hand-painted works by artists like Kozan Takai from the Shinano Province.
