Artists

Ryusei Kishida
Ryusei Kishida (1891-1929) is one of the leading modern Japanese Western-style painters. He first studied under Seiki Kuroda at the Hakubakai's Western-style painting institute and later encountered late Impressionist works in the literary magazine "Shirakaba" and produced works influenced by Cézanne, Van Gogh, and others. After the birth of his daughter, Reiko, he lovingly painted numerous portraits of her. Around this time, he began his exploration of "inner beauty," in which he pursued exquisite realism and looked deeply into the existence of objects and people. He was also attracted to the beauty of the Orient, such as Chinese Sung and Yuan painting, Nanga, and Ukiyoe, and sought to reflect this in his art.

This exhibition will trace the trajectory of Kishida Ryusei, a painter who developed a wide range of artistic expression during his short life of 38 years.
