Rethinking Sodeisha: The Birth of Avant-Garde Ceramics

Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
Established in Kyoto in 1948 (Showa 23), Sodeisha was founded by five ceramic artists: Kazuo Yagi, Tetsuo Kano, Hikaru Yamada, Misuke Matsui, and Osamu Suzuki, and has been active for 50 years. This exhibition focuses on the activities of Sōdeisha, which played a central role in leading the Japanese ceramics scene and establishing avant-garde ceramics in Japan, reassessing its significance and meaning. When looking at the period of Sodeisha's activities, its importance is particularly evident in the first half of its existence.

Therefore, this exhibition targets the period until 1973, marking 25 years since the formation of Sodeisha. It examines approximately 180 pieces of artwork and a large number of materials, including works by Picasso and Isamu Noguchi, who were influential in the avant-garde ceramics movement contemporaneous with Sodeisha, as well as pieces exhibited at the Contemporary International Ceramic Exhibition in 1964, providing a retrospective of the era when avant-garde ceramics emerged in Japan.
