The Sodeisha Group: An Era Born Out of Avant-garde Ceramics

Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Tomo Museum
Finished
Founded in 1948 by Kazuo Yagi, Tetsuo Kanoh, Hikaru Yamada, Yoshisuke Matsui, and Osamu Suzuki, Sodeisha has led the Japanese ceramic art scene for 50 years. As a result, they became known to create “objet art.” This exhibition reexamines Sodeisha’s significance, particularly its impact before the mid-1960s when overseas trends influenced Japanese ceramics. Focusing on the period up to 1973, it highlights the group’s avant-garde nature and its role in shaping the Japanese ceramic world.
