Pouch Merchants that Evolved with the Times - From Tobacco Pouches to Handbags

Tobacco & Salt Museum
Finished
During the era when Japanese clothing (wafuku) was predominant, pouches were commonly used to carry personal belongings. These pouches were worn around the waist or kept in the folds of clothing for easy portability, while also serving as important decorative items. Tobacco pouches were a prominent example of this, and many impressive pieces were created as art and craft items.

This exhibition will introduce the Yamamoto Collection, donated in 2016, focusing on tobacco pouches and providing an overview of the changes in their forms over time.
