On May 4, 1983, at 12:05 PM, his heart stopped beating. He was 47 years old. In his later years, despite the looming threat of liver cirrhosis casting a shadow of death, he devoted himself to creative activities, burning with the flame of life. As the doctor's orders finally came to a halt, instead of giving up on theater and film, he began to plead with his attending physician for ten more years to focus on his writing. However, his wish was not granted.
"I wanted to build my own grave while still alive," he wrote in the afterword of his complete poetry collection, and in his farewell haiku, he added, "My grave, if in my words, is sufficient." Shuji Terayama prophesied that even after losing his physical body, he would continue to exist as words. True to his declaration, people continue to seek his words, and for the 40 years since his passing, his works have been published annually.
Over the years, the question "What if Terayama were still alive today?" has been repeated endlessly. This question is not one of nostalgia but an ongoing consideration in the present tense. In recent years, the world has entered a new era of populism known as "Post-Truth," where emotions and personal beliefs drive society more than objective facts.
