21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa opened in October 2004, and this year marks its 20th anniversary. The first exhibition of this commemorative year will be Pop-up Art, which will be held in various locations throughout the spring and summer to showcase the museum's collection.
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, designed by SANAA Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa, is a distinctive circular building with all-glass exterior walls. For this exhibition, the works are arranged in such a way that they appear one after another in front of the visitor as if they were "popping up" on the forefront of a computer screen as he or she walks around the Interaction Zone, which is just like the circle of a doughnut.
Furthermore, during the exhibition, this exchange zone will be the venue for various performances, including piano and biwa (Japanese lute) concerts and dance performances. The "Project Workshop," located on the same site, will present a collection of Kenji Yanobe's works that address themes of technology, the environment, and the exploration of humanity, all in one place.
On exhibit will be a collection of works by 12 artists and numerous performances that develop following the characteristics of the space, in a bright, open space that is flooded with natural light and stretches horizontally.
