Picasso: Odes to Nature

Yoku Moku Museum
Finished

Artists

Pablo Picasso
This is the fourth in a series of exhibitions introducing the Yok Moku Museum collection from various perspectives.

The exhibition is supervised by Takao Okamura, former professor at Tokyo Zokei University and author of numerous books on Picasso and Spanish art, and Tsukasa Machida, curator at the Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art in Izumi City and an up-and-coming young Picasso researcher.

The exhibition will explore Picasso's deep love and empathy for all living things, which is the root of the "vitality" that overflows in his ceramic works, using a variety of motifs as clues.

It was after World War II that Picasso began to produce ceramic works in earnest. He moved his base of operations to the south of France, which shares the Mediterranean Sea with his birthplace of Malaga, Spain, and took a new turn in his production.

One of the characteristics of Picasso's ceramic works is that they feature the various forms of life that surrounded him. During Picasso's lifetime, many lives were lost due to various irrational reasons, including two world wars.

For Picasso, who came to have a strong fear of death, the end of World War II was a great joy and a victory for life.

This exhibition consists of 5 chapters titled "Picasso and the Bullfight," "La Paloma," "The Owl," "Life in the Palm of Your Hand - Sea Creatures, Insects, and Birds," and "Beyond Life, Pan and Jacqueline, God of the Pastures."
