Peter McDonald
Peter McDonald has portrayed various scenes of modern life, including airports, beaches, museums, street shops, and gyms.

Using surprising color combinations with acrylic gouache, McDonald humorously depicts large-headed figures wandering through everyday life. The overlapping colors symbolize communication, with the paint mixed to create a sense of transparency. His works featuring pioneering artists are vibrant with meaning. The 2008 John Moores Prize-winning piece "Fontana" shows Lucio Fontana slicing into a canvas, and later works depict Henri Matisse creating collages in his wheelchair. McDonald describes all his works as a celebration of life. The detailed depiction of everyday joys, such as donuts, socks, swimsuits, and abstract paintings within paintings, adds to the appeal of his work.

In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he held a solo exhibition titled "Sampo" (Walk). Curated by Hikotaro Kanehira, the exhibition was held across two galleries, Void+ in Omotesando and Side 2 in Nishi-Azabu, as well as Café Buik, wine restaurant Plate Tokyo, Pâtisserie Un Grain, and Bookstore Utrecht. During a challenging time, the exhibition encouraged people to walk outside, uplift their spirits, and enrich their time. It was his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 11 years.

The works presented in the current "Cocktails" exhibition were created between 2022 and 2024. The exhibition features 15 small canvases, ranging in size from postcard size to about 40 cm, 12 drawings, and 5 new lithographs. The lithographs were produced at the historic Poligrafa Obra Grafica workshop in Barcelona.

Titles like "Together," "House Party," and "New Friend" evoke the idea of finally being able to gather, converse, and enjoy life again. The exhibition also features cocktail glasses and pitchers by his friend, London-based glass artist Jochen Holz. Holz's unique glass pieces have been sold in Japan before, but this time, they are new works created especially for this exhibition with Peter McDonald.
