Artists

Kenkichi Tomimoto
The exhibition "Kenkichi Tomimoto" opened the newly completed Nara Prefectural Museum of Art in March 1973. The exhibition featured approximately 400 works by Kenkichi Tomimoto (1886-1963), a master of modern Japanese ceramics from Nara Prefecture, and was a fitting commemorative exhibition for the museum's opening. In the half-century since then, the museum has continued to highlight Tomimoto's activities and collect his works.

Tomimoto's ceramic career can be divided into three periods: the Yamato period (the Anso period), which began with the production of Raku ware and expanded into earthenware, white porcelain, and underglaze blue. The Tokyo period refined the techniques he had developed and expanded his production range into colored porcelain. And the Kyoto period, which perfected gold and silver painting techniques and created gorgeous, dignified works.

Many exhibitions have been held on Tomimoto's work as a ceramic artist, and his creative activities have been studied from various perspectives, including his pioneering role as a designer and his visits to ceramic production sites. In addition, from the perspective of Tomimoto's role in Japanese modern art, further research is expected to expand in the future.

This exhibition, held on the occasion of the museum's 50th anniversary, will trace the history of the museum's exhibitions on the theme of Kenkichi Tomimoto, and look back once again on his life and activities. It also aims to provide an opportunity to consider the prospects for the study of Tomimoto as indicated by his trajectory.
