The exhibition will take place in two venues, Sokyo and Sokyo Annex. The exhibition period is from February 15th (Tuesday) to April 17th (Sunday). Following solo exhibitions at Sokyo, Sokyo Annex, Sokyo Astumi (Tennozu), Sokyo Lisbon (Lisbon, Portugal), and overseas art fairs, this exhibition marks the 10th installment.
Starting from representational paintings and branching into abstract paintings, collages, etchings, sculptures, ceramics, and large-scale installations, Kimiyo Mishima has incorporated the theme of "fear" and "anxiety" towards the overflow of information society and the mass consumption of waste generated by Japan's high economic growth into her artwork. In her late 60s, she began expressing this "fear" using ceramics, which have an ephemeral nature, as they shatter into pieces when dropped, thus portraying his "crisis" towards Mishima's waste more realistically. Since the 1970s, she has presented representative works using ceramics such as empty cans, cardboard boxes, and comic books.
Sokyo will exhibit new ceramic works centered around two large-scale pieces titled "Work2003 (Newspaper)" created using melted slag. This will be the first exhibition of "Work2003 (Newspaper)" in a commercial gallery. Mishima mentions that she was not influenced by artists like Claes Oldenburg in enlarging her work.
Sokyo Annex will showcase five pieces from the "Monologue" series of flat works. These works, which differ greatly from conventional flat works using familiar waste materials such as newspapers, Life Magazine, mosquito nets, and futons, are part of the "Human Series." Some of these pieces will be publicly displayed for the first time in this exhibition. Mishima, who has earnestly devoted himself to her work, believing in her mentor and partner Shoji's words, "If you continue persistently, the time will come when you will be recognized as a woman," has recorded her life and viewed society from the perspective of a Japanese transgender individual.
