Osaka, which developed as a commercial and industrial city, formed a unique cultural sphere different from those of Tokyo and Kyoto and has produced unique and outstanding works of art. Supported by the culture of its citizens, modern Osaka's art, while following a trend that dates back to the Edo period, has flourished with a free and vigorous expression that is not bound by tradition.

This exhibition brings together more than 50 talented artists active in modern Osaka from the Meiji to Showa periods, including Tsunetomi Kitano, who was popular for his bewitching and decadent style and was ridiculed as a "devil school" artist, and Seien Shima, a pioneer of women painters in Osaka who was also admired alongside Shoen Uemura. This is the first-ever large-scale exhibition of Japanese-style painting from Osaka, whose uniqueness has been hidden in the shadows of the Tokyo and Kyoto art worlds.
