Hokusai Katsushika
In July 2024, the new 1,000 yen bill will feature the design of "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" from Katsushika Hokusai's "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji." This work is known as Hokusai's masterpiece, and behind it lies his insatiable curiosity to learn various painting techniques and his determination to evolve his art.

During Hokusai's Shunrō and Sōri periods (up to the age of 44), he absorbed the most painting styles in his lifetime. He studied the Kano and Tosa schools, Chinese painting, and even inherited the Rinpa style as the second Tawaraya Sōri. Hokusai was highly interested in Western painting, as evidenced by works using perspective techniques, such as "Ichinotani Kōbō Yudachi no zu," created during his Shunrō period. He continued to actively incorporate Western painting styles, laying the foundation for series like "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" during the Tenpō era.

The distinctive depiction of waves in "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is crucial to understanding Hokusai's artistic evolution. Hokusai spent decades refining his portrayal of waves. In "The Story of Chinzei Hachirō Tametomo" he depicted continuous waves swallowing ships and soldiers. In "Hokusai Manga," he introduced two types of waves, "approaching waves" and "receding waves." By the time of "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," his wave depiction had reached a pinnacle, but Hokusai continued to push boundaries. In "A Hundred Views of Mount Fuji," he presented the daring "Fuji from the Sea," where the wave's scale is dramatically expanded. About ten years later, during his visit to Obuse in Shinano Province, Hokusai left behind ceiling paintings for the Kamichō festival floats titled "Male Waves" and "Female Waves," also known as "Raging Waves." These works differ from his previous landscapes, focusing more on the waves themselves, marking the peak of his wave depiction.

This exhibition looks back on Hokusai's 70-year career and delves into his constant pursuit of artistic evolution. Enjoy the Hokusai works that have become more familiar with the issuance of the new banknote.
