He Xiangyu
ARTRO, a gallery housed in a renovated Meiji-era warehouse, and Manju-in Temple, a traditional Heian-period temple, will host He Xiangyu's first solo exhibition in Japan in five years, and his first in Kyoto. Based in Beijing and Berlin, He has critically examined personal, social, and political subjects through the transformation of materials and the reconstruction of cultural symbols. The exhibited works, all on view for the first time in Japan, include a series of photographs taken over a period of eight years of post-protest Berlin cityscapes and sculptures created in Jingdezhen, a Chinese ceramics production center with a history of over 1000 years. The exhibited works, all of which are on view for the first time in Japan, will bring a fresh and multilayered viewing experience to the serene and historic architectural spaces of each venue, suggesting the residue of memories from different times and spaces.
