Gold—Makie in Modernizing Japan

MOA Museum of Art
Finished
The fall of Tokugawa shogunate in the late 19th century and the subsequent demise of daimyo-class clans led many artisans of makie to lose their major patrons. Some of them survived this adversity and showcased their work at the World Exposition and National Industrial Exhibitions organized by the newly established government.
This exhibition presents outstanding works by the makie artists from this period of Japan’s modernization, including Ogawa Shōmin, Kawanobe Icchō, Shirayama Shōsai, Akatsuka Jitoku, and Uematsu Hōbi.
